Ghana Seeks Justice for Student Who Died in Latvia

A high-level Ghanaian delegation has met with Latvian authorities to demand justice for Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under unusual circumstances while studying in the Republic of Lativa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Accra, noting that the visit forms part of ongoing efforts to seek justice for the late student following an earlier government statement on February 2, 2026.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa led the delegation, which included the deceased’s mother and aunt, forensic experts, a pathologist, lawyers, the Ministry’s Ambassador, and consular officials from the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin.

During the visit, the delegation held discussions with Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Minister for the Interior, Police Chiefs, State Prosecutors, and investigators handling the case.

Latvian authorities informed the delegation that investigations are underway and active. Due to the strong interest expressed by the Government of Ghana, the investigations are now directly supervised by the Latvian Interior Ministry, with fresh investigators appointed to ensure credible outcomes.

The mother of the deceased submitted a formal statement to Latvian authorities as part of the official record for investigations, guided by the delegation.

Latvia has agreed to provide the final investigative report to Nana Agyei’s family, with no objection raised to Ghana’s demand for transparency in the process.

The Latvian side also welcomed further submissions of any additional information relevant to the case to assist investigations. The Ghanaian delegation indicated that additional submissions would be made following queries raised during the meetings.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured Ghanaians of its commitment to truth, transparency, and justice, pledging to maintain regular engagement with Latvian authorities and utilize all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure due process is followed.

Foreign Ministry officials are maintaining close contact with the bereaved family and will provide consistent updates to both the family and the general public.

The Ministry urged the public to avoid speculations and conjecture that could undermine ongoing investigations, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and rights of Ghanaians at home and abroad.
