GITFiC Briefs UN Resident Coordinator on 10th Anniversary Conference
The Ghana International Trade and Finance Conference (GITFiC) has met with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Zia Choudhury, to brief him on preparations for its 10th Commemorative Anniversary Conference, scheduled for October 14 and 15, 2026, in Accra.
The conference, built around GITFiC’s 3rd Global Debt Initiative and the 2nd AfCFTA Tertiary Students’ Congress, will be held under the theme “Scaling GITFiC’s Global Debt Initiative: Transforming Sovereign Debt Challenges into a Catalyst for Sustainable Development and Global Economic Broad-based Prosperity.”
The meeting reviewed progress made so far in organising the anniversary conference and focused on strengthening collaboration between GITFiC and the UN to advance dialogue on approaches to global debt challenges.
The two sides also explored ways to widen stakeholder participation and extend the reach of the annual meeting.
Choudhury committed to supporting the successful organisation of the conference, pledging to help identify and connect relevant institutions and key participants for strategic stakeholder engagement.
He also offered UN support for media publicity and communications, including assistance through the UN’s own communications platforms to strengthen GITFiC’s advocacy.
The two sides also discussed the importance of measuring the conference’s impact in real time.
The Global Debt Initiative is a GITFiC programme anchored on Agenda 2031, run in collaboration with the African Development Bank.
UN support is expected to reinforce GITFiC’s work promoting practical policy solutions to sovereign debt challenges in Ghana, Africa and the Global South, alongside its support for implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The 10th Commemorative Anniversary Conference is expected to bring together policymakers, economic and financial experts, academics, and public and private sector leaders to deliberate on strategies for turning sovereign debt challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth, under GITFiC’s Agenda 2031, which is being implemented with support from selected Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
