President Mahama Presents GH¢684,000 to Ghana’s Continental Club Representatives
President John Dramani Mahama has presented a total of GH¢684,000 to Medeama Sporting Club, Nations Football Club and Ampem Darkoa Ladies to support their participation in this season’s CAF inter-club competitions.
The financial support, provided through the Sports Development Fund, was presented during a courtesy call by the three clubs at the Jubilee House ahead of their respective continental campaigns.
Medeama, Ghana’s Premier League champions, received GH¢342,000 (US$30,000), while FA Cup winners Nations FC received GH¢228,000 (US$20,000). Ampem Darkoa Ladies, representing Ghana in the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers, received GH¢114,000 (US$10,000).
President Mahama congratulated the clubs for winning their domestic competitions and earning the right to represent Ghana in Africa, expressing optimism that they would surpass the performances of last year’s representatives.
“Last year, two teams came to me, and unfortunately, with all the enthusiasm, they did not go far. I hope that this year will be different,” he said.
He singled out Medeama’s CAF Champions League opponents, TP Mazembe, describing them as one of Africa’s most formidable clubs, but encouraged the Tarkwa-based side to believe in its ability to overcome the challenge.
The President used the occasion to advocate stronger investment in women’s football, saying Ghana’s women’s teams had consistently achieved greater success than their male counterparts despite receiving less financial support.
“Indeed, we have done much better in women’s football than in men’s football. Our women have won more trophies for us than the men, and yet we put all the money into men’s football,” he stated.
He said affirmative action was necessary to bridge the gap and deliberately support women’s clubs to compete at the highest level.
President Mahama also reiterated government’s commitment to improving sporting infrastructure, disclosing that the 2026 Budget provides funding for the construction of 10 new stadia, including facilities in the Oti, Western North, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah and North East regions.
He wished the three clubs success in their continental assignments and urged them to “recapture the glory days of Ghana football” by restoring the international reputation of Ghanaian club football.
