GNFS To Integrate Fire Safety Education Into Basic Schools

• 2 MIN READ

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is pushing to make fire safety education part of the basic school curriculum, aiming to teach children how to prevent fires and respond to emergencies from an early age.

The initiative is being developed in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and Ulster University.

Under the programme, pupils would receive age-appropriate lessons on fire prevention, safe behaviour and what to do when confronted with a fire or other emergency.

The GNFS said the initiative is being pursued under the leadership of Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong as part of efforts to strengthen fire safety awareness among children.

The programme was initially developed by the GNFS and Ulster University and has since been refined following consultations with education and fire safety experts.

The refined programme has been submitted to the Chief Fire Officer for consideration, with discussions continuing on its possible integration into the basic school curriculum.

The initiative would give pupils practical fire safety knowledge alongside their regular classroom education, potentially enabling them to recognise fire hazards, take preventive measures and respond more appropriately during emergencies.

The GNFS said the focus on children is intended to build fire safety awareness early and promote safer behaviour that could extend from schools into homes and communities.
