The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has assured families affected by the recent fatal road crash in Bukom of the Government’s support during their time of grief.

Accompanied by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, the Minister visited the accident scene, the home of the deceased young woman, and some survivors recovering from the incident. The visit was to express sympathy, assessing the situation firsthand, and offer assurance to those affected.

Speaking to the bereaved family and members of the community, Dr Lartey described the loss of the young woman as heartbreaking and extended the Government’s deepest condolences. She also wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery and encouraged them to remain strong as they heal.

According to the Minister, President John Dramani Mahama directed her and the Greater Accra Regional Minister to visit Bukom after learning about the tragedy through media reports. She said the President wanted the Government to engage directly with the affected families and better understand the support they require.

Dr Lartey noted that while some victims have been discharged from the hospital, others are still receiving medical care. She explained that the Government will assess the needs of the injured to determine the appropriate assistance. Regarding the bereaved family, she said further steps would be guided by the outcome of the ongoing court proceedings.

The Minister also emphasised the importance of strengthening road safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. She disclosed that the Greater Accra Regional Minister, working with the Mayor of Accra and the area’s Member of Parliament, will engage relevant stakeholders to identify practical solutions to improve safety in the community.

She further praised the youth and residents of Bukom for their quick response in the aftermath of the accident, saying their efforts in rescuing the injured and assisting with the respectful handling of the deceased demonstrated remarkable compassion and unity.
