NHIA Takes Health Insurance Education to Schools Through Inter-School Quiz
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is stepping up efforts to deepen public understanding of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), using schools as a platform to educate young people on the importance of health insurance and maintaining active membership.
The initiative formed part of the launch of the Regional NHIS Inter-Schools Quiz Competition, held on Wednesday at Kadjebi in the Oti Region.
Launching the competition, the Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, said the initiative was designed to equip students with a better understanding of the Scheme, its benefits and the role they could play in promoting health insurance within their communities.
He explained that the NHIS was established to remove financial barriers to healthcare, but stressed that its effectiveness depended largely on how well people understood and used the Scheme.
According to him, members needed to know how to enrol, maintain active membership and seek assistance whenever they encountered difficulties.
Dr Bampoe expressed confidence that educating young people about the NHIS would help them become ambassadors of the Scheme by sharing accurate information with their peers, parents and other members of their communities.
He commended the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools for supporting the initiative and creating the opportunity for students to participate.
On behalf of the NHIA Board and Executive Management, Dr Bampoe officially launched the competition, which is expected to take place across all 16 regions of the country.
Winners from the regional contests will advance to zonal competitions, where finalists will be selected for the national championship scheduled for later in the year.
Three schools—Bueman Senior High School, Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School, and St. Mary’s Boys Minor Seminary—participated in the Oti Regional contest, which forms part of the competition’s qualifying stages.
