NHIS Engages Mfantseman Residents on Free Primary Healthcare
Residents of Ekumfi Narkwa in the Mfantseman District have been sensitised to the benefits of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme and the One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC) digital solution as part of efforts to improve access to basic healthcare.
The engagement, organised by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Mfantseman District Office on Tuesday, brought together traditional leaders, opinion leaders, women’s groups, young people and school pupils.
The durbar formed part of efforts by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to deepen public understanding of the two initiatives and ensure residents are able to take advantage of the services available to them.
The NHIA Special Projects Director, Lawyer Stephen Yaw Oduro, explained that the FPHC and OTAC initiatives were aligned with the government’s broader objective of ensuring citizens, particularly vulnerable groups, had uninterrupted access to basic healthcare without financial barriers.
He said the initiatives were expected to contribute to a more accessible and responsive healthcare system by removing some of the cost-related challenges that prevent people from seeking care.
The Mfantseman District Manager, Raphael Eshun, in his welcome address, said the initiatives would strengthen healthcare delivery and help reduce financial barriers to accessing essential health services.
The District Public Relations Officer, Ms Abigail Grant-Fynn, described the Free Primary Healthcare programme as a significant development in Ghana’s healthcare system and urged residents to make full use of the services.
She also encouraged NHIS members to visit their nearest district offices to update their contact details to facilitate effective communication and access to NHIS services.
The NHIA Regional Operations Manager, Daniel Kofi Nyamadi, and the Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, Kwadwo Gyekye, also highlighted the benefits of the Free Primary Healthcare programme and encouraged residents to familiarise themselves with the initiative.
The community durbar provided an opportunity for residents to learn more about the new healthcare measures and how they could benefit from them.
