Road Transport Operators Announce 8% Fare Increase Effective September 26
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have announced an upward adjustment of public transport fares by eight per cent (8%), effective Saturday, 26th September, 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the unions said the decision was taken pursuant to the Administrative Instrument on Public Transport Fares, following extensive consultations with the Ministry of Transport and commercial road transport operators between 8th and 22nd September, 2026.
The leadership explained that the increment reflects changes in ex‑pump prices of petroleum products, spare parts, general vehicle maintenance, and other operational inputs, while also considering the plight of drivers, commuters, and the travelling public.
“The revised fares will apply to shared taxis, intra‑city tro‑tro services, intercity long‑distance services, and haulage,” the statement read.
The unions expressed appreciation to the Minister for Transport and all stakeholders for the constructive manner in which negotiations were conducted, and acknowledged Government’s intervention on the price of diesel, which they said helped moderate the extent of the adjustment.
According to the statement, the eight per cent increment will be calculated on the approved fares that took effect on 24th May, 2025.
Commercial transport operators have been directed to comply strictly with the approved fares and to display the schedule conspicuously at loading terminals and stations.
“Transport Operators are further reminded that the charging of fares in excess of the approved rates shall attract the appropriate sanctions from the Unions,” it added.
The statement reaffirmed the commitment of road transport operators to continue engaging Government and all relevant stakeholders in the collective interest of the industry and the motoring public.
