Parliamentary Committee Commends NPA for Strengthening Petroleum Sector Regulation
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Economy and Development has commended the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for its work in regulating Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector and supporting the country’s economy.
The commendation was made by the Chairperson of the Committee, Eric Afful, during a working visit to the Authority, where members met with the Chief Executive, Mr Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, Esq., and the NPA’s executive management team to gain a better understanding of the Authority’s operations and regulatory responsibilities.
Mr Afful described the NPA as an institution that plays an important role in keeping the economy running and contributing to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He said the Committee’s visit formed part of its oversight responsibilities and was intended to follow up on previous engagements and verify information relating to the Authority’s work.
He explained that the Committee’s objective was to work with the NPA rather than act as an enforcement body, adding that Parliament was committed to supporting institutions that contribute to national development.
Mr Tameklo welcomed the Committee and thanked its members for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of Parliament’s continued interest in strengthening Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
He said the Authority had opened its doors to Parliament to provide members with first-hand information on its operations.
“Today the Authority is honoured to receive the members of this august committee of Parliament. I have always maintained that the work of MPs is not a joke and so today, we open our doors for verification, so it does not become the CEO’s words only,” he said.
Mr Tameklo reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to ensuring a safe, efficient and resilient petroleum industry.
He noted that the engagement offered the Authority the opportunity to present its achievements, ongoing reforms and the measures to strengthen regulatory oversight across the sector.
As part of the visit, members of the Committee toured key operational facilities at the NPA. They were taken through the functions of the Authority’s technical departments and introduced to the systems that support its regulatory activities.
