Climate Change Minister Engages Upper East Stakeholders on Local Climate Action
The Minister of State in Charge of Climate Change and Sustainability, Mr Seidu Issifu, has engaged stakeholders in the Upper East Region to strengthen local climate action and promote sustainable development.
The engagement, held on Tuesday, brought together the Upper East Regional Minister, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), the Regional Coordinating Director, representatives from Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), development partners, the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project 2 (GPSNP2), and other stakeholders.
Addressing participants, the minister highlighted the role of local authorities in translating national climate policies into practical solutions that address community needs.
He noted that the Upper East Region continues to face climate-related challenges, including prolonged dry spells, irregular rainfall patterns, rising temperatures and pressure on water resources.
According to him, these challenges are affecting agriculture, livelihoods and local development efforts.
The Minister said his office is working towards establishing Climate Change and Sustainability Units in all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to improve institutional capacity, incorporate climate resilience into local development planning and support the preparation of projects that can attract climate financing.
He called for increased cooperation among government institutions, development partners, research institutions, the private sector and local authorities to strengthen climate action and improve livelihoods, particularly in rural communities.
