Mayor Calls for Stronger KMA-KNUST Partnership to Accelerate Kumasi’s Development
The Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, has called for a stronger partnership between the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to help address challenges confronting the city and accelerate its development.
He said Kumasi was faced with several challenges, including waste management, traffic congestion, inadequate street lighting, poor infrastructure and other technical difficulties, which could be effectively addressed through collaboration with KNUST.
According to him, research and innovations developed by KNUST should be tailored towards solving practical problems within the metropolis, enabling the university and city authorities to work together to create a cleaner, safer and more attractive city.
Mr Agyemang Boadi said such collaboration would help create a conducive environment to attract investors, generate employment opportunities and promote sustainable development in Kumasi.
The mayor made the call on Wednesday, when he received a delegation from KNUST led by the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christian Agyare.
He further emphasised the need for proper landscaping, improved city planning, re-organisation and the adoption of modern technology to bring Kumasi in line with contemporary international standards.
He also urged the two institutions to leverage the global tours and engagements of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to attract investors, innovative ideas and development opportunities to the city.
Professor Christian Agyare thanked the mayor for the warm reception and welcomed the proposed partnership, indicating KNUST’s readiness to work closely with the KMA.
He, however, called for the partnership to be formalised to provide a clear framework for collaboration between the two institutions.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by Nana Ansah Sasraku III, Kyidomhene of Mamfe and Chairman of the KNUST Alumni Endowment Fund, and Dr Herman Addae, Global President of the KNUST Alumni Association.
