President Mahama in Luanda for 21st AU Extraordinary Summit on Conflict Resolution

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, focused on strengthening conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms across the continent.

The President was received at the airport by Angola’s Minister for Planning, Victor Hugo Guilherme.

The high-level summit, scheduled for 30 August 2026, will be led by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.

The summit’s primary agenda is to consider and adopt a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan and Implementation Matrix on Conflict Prevention and Resolution for the continent. African leaders are expected to assess existing continental peace and security frameworks and agree on measures to improve coordination, responsiveness, implementation and financing of both the African Peace and Security Architecture and the African Governance Architecture.

The gathering takes place against a backdrop of mounting security challenges across the continent, including in Sudan, Eastern DRC, the Sahel region, the Horn of Africa and Mozambique.

President Mahama and fellow African heads of state are expected to forge actionable strategies during the session to strengthen regional stability and reinforce the continent’s collective capacity for peacebuilding.
