AIB Ghana Commissioner calls for Stronger Follow-Up on Aviation Safety Recommendations

The Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB Ghana), Mr John M.K. Wumborti, has called for stronger mechanisms to ensure the timely implementation of safety recommendations arising from aircraft accident and incident investigations.

He said the effective implementation of safety recommendations was critical to preventing the recurrence of accidents and incidents as well as strengthening confidence in Ghana’s aviation sector.

Mr Wumborti made the call in Accra at the opening of AIB Ghana’s 2026 Mid-Year Performance Review Meeting, a two-day strategic session that brought together the Board, Management and staff of the Bureau to assess its performance during the first half of the year.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the Bureau to review targets set at the beginning of 2026, assess achievements and challenges, identify gaps and establish priorities for the remainder of the year.

Mr Wumborti described the exercise as an opportunity to “review, reflect and realign,” stressing the need for the Bureau to critically examine its performance and assign clear responsibilities for addressing areas requiring improvement.

He emphasised the importance of aviation safety to Ghana’s socio-economic development, noting that a safe and reliable aviation sector could reduce the cost of doing business, attract investment and strengthen Ghana’s connection to global markets.

The Commissioner urged staff to pay particular attention to the timeliness of investigation reports and improve mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of safety recommendations.

“Every safety recommendation implemented is something that we build for ourselves,” he said, stressing that the ultimate value of an investigation was realised when its findings contributed to preventing future accidents and incidents.

Mr Wumborti identified capacity development and stakeholder collaboration as key priorities for the second half of 2026.

He assured staff that AIB Ghana would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and pursue the resources needed to strengthen its institutional capacity and enable the Bureau to meet international standards.

He urged Management, Board members and staff to actively participate in the strategic review and work collectively to develop practical and sustainable solutions to challenges confronting the institution.

The Board Chairman of AIB Ghana, Engineer Daniel Acquah, commended the Bureau for organising the performance review, describing it as an important step towards strengthening its institutional development.

He encouraged participants to use the programme not only as a strategic review but also as a learning opportunity, urging staff to contribute their ideas and perspectives to improve the Bureau’s policies and plans.

Engineer Acquah reaffirmed the Board’s support for Management and staff and urged participants to approach the exercise with commitment, openness and a shared sense of responsibility.
