President Mahama Arrives in Belgrade for 65th Non-Aligned Movement Summit
President John Dramani Mahama is in Belgrade, Serbia, to participate in the summit commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
The anniversary summit is being hosted by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić under the theme, “The Legacy of Non-Alignment: Lessons for Today’s World,” and has brought together leaders and senior representatives from more than 30 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
President Mahama’s participation underscores Ghana’s historic role as one of the founding members of the movement, which was established in 1961 during the Cold War to provide developing nations with an independent diplomatic path outside the rival Western and Soviet blocs.
Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was among the five visionary leaders who championed the creation of the Non-Aligned Movement alongside Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia, Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt and Sukarno of Indonesia.
The summit is expected to reflect on the movement’s legacy while addressing contemporary global challenges, including peace and security, sustainable development, economic cooperation, climate change and the reform of international governance institutions.
With 120 member states, the Non-Aligned Movement remains the largest grouping of countries outside the United Nations and continues to advocate sovereign equality, respect for territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of states and greater collaboration among developing nations.
President Mahama is expected to join fellow Heads of State and Government in discussions aimed at strengthening solidarity among Global South countries and advancing a more equitable international order.
