Gov’t Secures More Data, Cheaper Broadband for Ghanaians
Government has secured remarkable improvements in mobile data and broadband affordability as part of efforts to reduce the cost of digital connectivity for Ghanaians.
The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr Samuel Nartey George, made this knownwhen he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday.
He said negotiations with telecommunications operators had resulted in increased data allocations and substantial reductions in broadband prices, delivering immediate benefits to consumers.
Mr George said MTN had increased mobile data volumes by 15 per cent, while Telecel and AirtelTigo had increased theirs by 10 per cent.
He added that MTN’s fibre broadband tariffs had also been revised, with the 100 Mbps unlimited package dropping from GH¢987 to GH¢299 per month, representing one of the largest reductions in residential broadband pricing in recent years.
The Minister said the interventions formed part of President John Dramani Mahama’s digital transformation agenda to make internet access more affordable and expand opportunities for education, business and innovation.
According to him, government’s objective is to ensure that digital connectivity becomes a tool for inclusive economic growth rather than a luxury available to only a few.
Mr George said his Ministry will continue to work to improve digital infrastructure and expand access to reliable, high-speed internet across the country.
