Ama Begins Rigorous Road Safety Enforcement on Tricycles Following Grace Period Expiration

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has initiated strict enforcement of its mandatory tricycle safety directives following the expiration of the August 31 compliance deadline set for commercial operators within the metropolis.

The Chief Executive of the Assembly, Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, personally led task force officials on Thursday at Kaneshie First Light to inspect vehicles, monitor rider compliance, and engage operators on highway regulations.

Under the enforced safety framework, all tricycle riders are legally required to install high-visibility reflective stickers on the rear and sides of their vehicles, wear protective helmets, and wear reflective vests during operation.

Speaking during the operational sweep, Mr Allotey emphasised that the exercise forms part of a broader municipal strategy to reduce avoidable road traffic crashes and restore order to major arterial transit routes.

“The grace period extended to operators has elapsed. This enforcement exercise is strictly a life-saving intervention designed to increase rider visibility during night hours and inclement weather, protecting riders, passengers, and motorists alike from preventable collisions,” the Mayor declared.

Addressing lane discipline along major thoroughfares, Mr Allotey warned operators against plying inner high-speed lanes, directing that all tricycles must strictly utilise outer service lanes to maintain smooth traffic flow and minimise side-impact hazards.

The Mayor called on local tricycle rider unions and transport associations to self-regulate and enforce total compliance among their members, reiterating that the Assembly will sustain collaboration with key state transport agencies to uphold bye-laws and secure public safety across the capital.
