Ama Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Metro Mass Terminal Over Poor Sanitation
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the management of the Metro Mass Transit terminal at Kaneshie First Light to clear accumulated filth within the facility or face immediate legal prosecution.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, issued the directive on Thursday when he made an unscheduled stop at the terminal after inspecting the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project site near Accra Academy.
Mr Allotey warned that the Assembly will strictly enforce its environmental sanitation bye-laws and will no longer tolerate unsanitary conditions at public transport hubs, markets, and commercial centres across the capital.
“Managers of public facilities have a legal and civic duty to maintain clean surroundings at all times. The Assembly’s sanitation drive leaves no room for filth, and terminal operators who fail to comply with basic hygiene standards will be processed for court,” the Mayor cautioned.
Extending the enforcement exercise to neighbouring transport nodes, Mr Allotey issued a strict six-hour deadline to commercial drivers at the Takoradi station near Kaneshie Market to clean their premises and procure adequate waste bins to prevent indiscriminate dumping.
To improve transport management in the metropolis, the MCE urged all commercial drivers operating at the station to register and regularise their operations with the Assembly for proper identification and regulatory oversight.
During the tour, the Mayor also engaged shop owners and market women around the Kaneshie Market, warning them against trading on pedestrian walkways, blocking drainage systems, and obstructing vehicular traffic.
He emphasised that street hawking on pavements severely undermines public safety and urban order.
Mr Allotey further inspected road infrastructure along the Kaneshie corridor, noting severe potholes and pavement defects for prompt maintenance, reiterating the Assembly’s commitment to combining continuous public education with strict legal enforcement to ensure a clean, safe, and orderly metropolis.
