AMA Gives Agbogbloshie Traders One-Month Ultimatum to Vacate Land Reserved for 24-Hour Economy Market

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has served a one-month eviction notice to traders and other occupants on portions of land at Agbogbloshie, popularly known as the Nzema Market, earmarked for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Market.

The notice, which took effect from Tuesday, July 29, 2026, is expected to expire on August 28, 2026, after which the Assembly will begin demolishing structures on the affected portions of the land.

According to the AMA, all affected traders and commercial operators at the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, the Nzema Market, and portions of the Yam Market will be relocated to an alternative parcel of land prepared by the Assembly specifically for them.

In the next phase, the Assembly will embark on a public education and sensitisation campaign from Wednesday to inform traders, community leaders, and the general public about the redevelopment project, its benefits, the clearance process, and the relocation arrangements for affected persons.

The 24-Hour Economy Market is part of the government’s broader plan to decongest central Accra, improve sanitation, and create a modern trading hub that can operate round the clock.

AMA officials say the relocation and redevelopment are being done in consultation with stakeholders to minimise disruption and ensure a smooth transition for all affected traders.
