Fighting Filth: KMA to Introduce “Enhanced Samansaman”

As part of efforts to combat filth and improve sanitation in the Garden City, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced plans to revisit the “Samansaman” concept.

‘Samansaman’ refers to an official house-to-house sanitary inspector who summons people who dispose of waste improperly to the assembly for punishment.

In view of this, the Assembly has issued a statement, announcing that, “Effective July 1, 2026, a special sanitation task force comprising environmental officers, military and police personnel will be deployed to selected communities in the city to enforce environmental laws and bye-laws.”

According to the statement issued on the 8th of June 2026, the task force will operate from 8:00 am to 11:00 am each working day.

“Offenders will be hauled immediately before a court of law for prosecution,” the statement read.

The statement also announced that the next National Sanitation Day (NSD) will be observed on 1st July in the Abrepo Electoral Area, and it will be led by the Assembly Member of the area.

The Metropolitan Assembly also used the opportunity to appeal to the citizens to endeavour to keep their surroundings clean.
