Gender Ministry Educates Nima Pupils on Dangers of Child Marriage

• 2 MIN READ

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has stepped up efforts to prevent child marriage through school-based education, engaging pupils of Tafsiliyya Islamic School in Nima, Accra, on the dangers of the practice and the need to protect children’s rights.

The sensitisation programme focused on the causes and consequences of child marriage, its impact on children’s education and future opportunities, and practical measures to prevent it.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry’s Chief Director, Dr Marian W. A. Kpakpah, the Head of the Child Marriage Unit, Saphia Tamimu, urged the pupils to prioritise their education, pursue their ambitions and acquire skills that would prepare them for independent and productive lives.

She emphasised the importance of completing basic and secondary education before moving on to higher education or vocational training, noting that education and skills development would equip them to achieve their goals, become financially independent and make informed decisions about their future.

Facilitators Belinda Mills and Naa Dedei A. Komey, both Assistant Programme Officers of the Child Marriage Unit, used interactive discussions to explain how child marriage could interrupt schooling, undermine personal development and limit future opportunities.

They also encouraged the pupils to speak up and seek help whenever they encountered or suspected a case of child marriage.

As part of the reporting process, they introduced the Ministry’s toll-free number, 0800 111 222, through which cases could be reported and assistance sought.

The programme forms part of MoGCSP’s ongoing efforts to eliminate child marriage through public education.
