Gender Minister Assures Obuasi SHTS Students of Government’s Support
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has assured students affected by the alleged sexual abuse at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) of the government’s support, stressing the need to protect their welfare, dignity and emotional well-being.
The assurance came when the Minister met some of the affected students to listen to their concerns and discuss the support needed to help them through the difficult period.
Dr Lartey emphasised that the students must be treated with sensitivity and confidentiality and protected from further distress, stigma and victimisation as investigations into the allegations continue.
She said the Ministry would work closely with the Ghana Education Service, social welfare officers, health professionals and other relevant institutions to ensure that the students receive appropriate care and assistance based on their individual needs.
As part of the response, the Ministry has deployed an advance team comprising officers from the Department of Social Welfare, the Domestic Violence Secretariat and the Department of Children to engage the affected students and their families, assess their needs and coordinate the necessary interventions.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children’s rights and working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that schools remain safe environments where students can learn and develop without fear of abuse.
