President Mahama Optimistic About National Airline’s Return Before Leaving Office

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed hope that Ghana’s national airline will return to operation before the end of his tenure, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s transport sector.

He said work was underway to rebuild the national carrier, which he believes will complement investments in roads, railways, ports and airports to improve connectivity and support economic activity.

President Mahama made the remarks in his address after receiving an honorary doctorate from the Russian University of Transport in Moscow on Tuesday.

“And even as I speak, we are working on rebuilding our cherished national airline. It is my hope that before I leave office we will have it back in the air,” he said.

The President said transport infrastructure was an important driver of national development, enabling farmers to move produce to markets, workers to reach their places of employment and businesses to transport goods efficiently between production centres and consumers.

He outlined investments in the expansion of existing port facilities, the reconstruction of major road networks and airport development, including the construction of three new regional airports.

He also said work was ongoing to introduce new freight trains and expand the railway network.

President Mahama noted that these projects required trained professionals and specialised skills to develop, operate and maintain transport infrastructure effectively.

He called for stronger collaboration between Ghanaian institutions and the Russian University of Transport in areas such as railway development, logistics, transport engineering, road safety and traffic management technology.

The President said such cooperation would strengthen local expertise and support the development of transport systems that respond to Ghana’s economic and social needs.
