Ghana to Showcase Culture, Expand Trade Opportunities at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Ghana’s High Commission in the United Kingdom has announced plans to use the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as a platform to promote the country’s culture, strengthen diplomatic relations and create opportunities for trade, tourism and investment.

The High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Mrs Sabah Zita Benson, made this known during a high-level reception hosted by Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, ahead of the opening ceremony of the Games on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

Leading Ghana’s participation at the event, Mrs Benson said the High Commission was committed to ensuring that Ghana’s presence at the Games extends beyond sporting activities.

“We are committed to supporting Team Ghana while using the Commonwealth Games as a platform to showcase Ghana’s rich culture, expand opportunities for trade, tourism and investment, and strengthen our relations with Commonwealth partners,” she said.

She said sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games provide countries with opportunities to engage through dialogue, cultural exchange and international partnerships.

Mrs Benson held engagements with Heads of Mission, Commonwealth officials and international partners on areas of mutual interest, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to deepening cooperation within the Commonwealth.

She noted that Ghana’s participation in the Games aligns with the country’s broader foreign policy objectives of strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations while creating avenues for economic collaboration.

The High Commission said it would continue to work with Commonwealth institutions, event organisers and Ghanaian stakeholders to ensure that Team Ghana’s participation generates benefits both on and off the field.

The reception brought together Commonwealth Sports Ministers, Heads of Mission, senior government officials and diplomats from across the Commonwealth.
