NRCC Supports JICA-Funded Substation to Improve Power Supply in Tamale

• 3 MIN READ

The Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) has pledged its support for the implementation of a Japan-funded electricity substation project expected to improve power supply reliability in Tamale and surrounding communities.

The Director of Administration of the NRCC, Mr Baba Ahmed Abdul Rahaman, gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) at the Council’s offices on Thursday.

The engagement focused on preparations for the proposed RCC Substation project and the support required from regional authorities to ensure its smooth implementation.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mr Mabe Joshua Biliwi expressed appreciation to the NRCC for its cooperation, particularly the release of land earmarked for the construction of the substation.

He explained that the visit formed part of preparatory engagements ahead of the commencement of construction, which is expected to begin in March 2027 and take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete.

The delegation noted that the project would help strengthen electricity distribution and improve the reliability of power supply to Tamale and neighbouring communities, where electricity demand continues to grow.

Mr Biliwi stressed the importance of continued cooperation among the implementing institutions and regional authorities, appealing to the NRCC to assist with security, stakeholder coordination and other administrative arrangements throughout the construction period.

He also disclosed that the substation project would be undertaken alongside the regional hospital project, formerly known as the Tamale Central Hospital project. Both projects are being funded through grants from the Government of Japan.

Responding on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister, the chiefs and people of the region, Mr Abdul Rahaman expressed appreciation to the Government of Japan, JICA and NEDCo for their continued support towards infrastructure development in the Northern Region.

He described the substation project as important to the region’s development, noting that a more reliable electricity supply would support businesses, public institutions and other economic activities.

He assured the delegation that the NRCC would work closely with JICA, NEDCo, the contractor and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate the necessary coordination and support for the successful execution of the project.

Mr Abdul Rahaman added that the Council remained committed to maintaining effective communication with the project partners and assisting with issues that might arise during implementation.

The project is expected to strengthen electricity infrastructure in Tamale, improve power supply reliability and support the region’s growing development and economic needs.
