Assembly Members praise intensified patrols on Obuasi-Dunkwa road, call for similar action on Kunka–Hia–Mile 9 stretch.
Members of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly have commended the Ashanti South Regional Police Command for its sustained efforts in combating armed robbery attacks along the Obuasi-Dunkwa Highway.
The commendation was made during deliberations at the Assembly’s First Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session, which ended on Monday, June 8, 2026.
Assembly Members acknowledged the significant improvement in security along the highway, noting that the intensified police presence has brought relief to traders, transport operators, and commuters who had previously lived in fear of frequent armed robbery attacks on the stretch.
Speaking on the floor of the Assembly, The Presiding Member Mr. Dawuda described the intervention by the Police as commendable and deserving of recognition.
“I think the police intervention on the highway is exceptional and deserves to be acknowledged by this House,” he stated.
Other members echoed similar sentiments, pointing to the deployment of security barriers, increased patrols, and intelligence-led operations that have helped restore confidence among road users.
Assembly Members noted that the intensified security measures have led to the arrest of several robbery suspects operating along the highway, and number of the suspects have subsequently been prosecuted and convicted, contributing to a significant decline in robbery incidents on the route.
They observed that the proactive approach adopted by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command has played a crucial role in improving safety and security for residents and travellers.
Despite the successes recorded on the Obuasi-Dunkwa Highway, Assembly Members expressed concern over emerging reports of robbery activities along the Kunka–Hia–Mile 9 road.
They appealed to the Police Command to extend similar security operations to that stretch, which they said is gradually becoming a hotspot for criminal activities.
According to the Members, traders and commuters using the road have increasingly become targets of robbery attacks, creating fear and insecurity among residents.
Until the recent police intervention, the Obuasi-Dunkwa Highway had gained notoriety as one of the dangerous routes within the area due to frequent armed robbery attacks. Several travelers reportedly lost valuables, while others suffered injuries during attacks carried out by armed criminals along the stretch.
The Assembly noted that persistent public concern and appeals from affected communities may have contributed to the intensified security operations that have now reduced the incidence of armed robbery to what Members described as “the barest minimum.”
Assembly Members expressed optimism that sustained police patrols and surveillance would help consolidate the gains made and ensure lasting security on the highway and other vulnerable roads within the municipality.
