RTI OFFICERS USE RADIO PLATFORM TO PROMOTE ACCESS TO INFORMATION IN TANO SOUTH MUNICIPALITY
Right to Information (RTI) Officers of the Tano South Municipal Assembly have intensified public education efforts on the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), through a sensitization programme aired on Bechem FM on May 22, 2026. The community engagement initiative was aimed at increasing public awareness of the RTI Act and empowering citizens to exercise their constitutional right to access information held by public institutions. The programme formed part of ongoing efforts to deepen transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance within the municipality.

During the live radio discussion, the RTI Officers explained that the RTI Act derives its authority from Article 21(1)(f) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and serves as a vital tool for promoting open governance. They highlighted the critical role of Information Officers in facilitating access to information, guiding applicants through the request process, and ensuring compliance with the provisions of the law. According to the officers, access to information enables citizens to make informed decisions, participate meaningfully in governance processes, and contribute to national and local development.
The officers further educated listeners on the procedures for requesting information under the Act, noting that both citizens and non-citizens may apply for information from public institutions. They explained the application process, the role of RTI Officers in handling requests, and the applicable fees associated with accessing information. Emphasis was placed on the importance of public awareness in ensuring that individuals understand and utilize their rights under the law to promote transparency and accountability in public administration.

The interactive nature of the programme allowed members of the public to call in and seek clarification on the practical application of the RTI Act. RTI Officers responded to questions and provided detailed explanations on various aspects of the law, helping listeners gain a better understanding of their rights and responsibilities. The engagement underscored the importance of community outreach in advancing the objectives of the RTI Act and reaffirmed the commitment of the Tano South Municipal Assembly to fostering an informed citizenry, strengthening democratic governance, and supporting sustainable community development through access to information.
