128 Vehicles to Boost Monitoring and Service Delivery In Local Assemblies – Mr. Mahama Ayariga
The Ministry for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has provided 128 vehicles to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) is expected to strengthen development project monitoring, improve administrative supervision and enhance public service delivery across the country.
The vehicles were handed over to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and the Assemblies by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, at a ceremony held on Tuesday, at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Madina, Accra.
The intervention is intended to improve the operational capacity of local government institutions by providing the logistical support needed to monitor development projects, coordinate activities and respond to the needs of communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Ayariga cautioned the MMDCEs against using the vehicles for personal errands, family events, private business or other activities unrelated to their official duties.
He stressed that the vehicles were acquired with public funds and must be used exclusively for their intended purposes, urging the beneficiaries to demonstrate integrity, discipline and accountability in managing state resources.
The Minister noted that MMDCEs represented government at the local level and were expected to uphold high standards of conduct in the discharge of their responsibilities.
He also urged the Assemblies to establish strict maintenance procedures, promote responsible driving and introduce effective accountability measures to prevent misuse, neglect and unnecessary expenditure.
Mr. Ayariga emphasised that the success of the intervention would depend on the beneficiaries’ commitment to protecting the vehicles and ensuring that they contributed meaningfully to local development.
As part of efforts to strengthen grassroots governance, the Minister announced plans to provide motorcycles to Assembly Members to facilitate their work within their respective electoral areas.
The proposed provision is expected to improve the mobility of Assembly Members, strengthen engagement with constituents and enable them to identify, report and follow up on development challenges more promptly.
Speaking on behalf of his fellow MMDCEs, the Mayor of Tamale, Mr. Abubakari Adam Takoro, expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for the intervention, describing it as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance.
He said “the vehicles would improve the ability of the Assemblies to carry out their responsibilities, particularly in project monitoring, administrative supervision, community engagement and the coordination of development activities”.
Mr. Takoro assured the Minister that the beneficiary Assemblies would ensure the vehicles were used for their intended purposes and properly maintained to preserve their value and extend their useful life.
He further stressed that the Assemblies recognised the importance of protecting public investments and ensuring that the vehicles served the collective interests of the communities they were intended to support.
The mayor reiterated his appreciation to President Mahama for providing local government institutions with logistical support to enable them to discharge their statutory responsibilities more effectively.
The provision of the vehicles highlights the importance of equipping local authorities with the resources needed to translate development policies and programmes into practical outcomes for citizens.
With improved mobility, the beneficiary Assemblies are expected to strengthen field supervision, monitor development projects more regularly and improve coordination of public services within their respective jurisdictions.
The impact of the intervention will depend on the effective deployment, proper maintenance and accountable use of the vehicles to ensure that the investment delivers lasting benefits to communities across the country.
