Ga Traditional Council Backs Agbogbloshie 24-Hour Market Project

The Ga Traditional Council has pledged its full support for the government’s proposed 24-hour market project at Agbogbloshie, clearing the way for the commencement of one of Accra’s flagship commercial infrastructure developments.

The commitment was made when the Mayor of Accra, Mr. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, led the project team to brief the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, and members of the Ga Traditional Council on the scope, timeline and expected impact of the project.

The meeting sought the blessings of the traditional custodians of the land before construction begins, while providing details of the proposed development and its implementation schedule.

The four-acre market will integrate traditional trading with modern commercial infrastructure, featuring shops, stalls, warehouses, cold stores, a supermarket, restaurants, a livestock and meat section, office spaces and essential public services, including a police post, fire station, clinic, pharmacy, daycare centre, women’s bank and limited accommodation for traders operating overnight.

Welcoming the project, the Ga Mantse expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for initiating the development and assured the Mayor of the Traditional Council’s cooperation throughout the implementation process.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II said the new market would provide traders, particularly market women, with a safer, more organised and conducive environment to conduct business while contributing to Accra’s economic growth.

Mayor Allotey described the engagement as a crucial step in ensuring that the city’s traditional authorities remained key partners in the capital’s development agenda.

He stressed that major projects in Accra must be undertaken with the knowledge and blessings of the traditional landowners, adding that collaboration among government, traditional authorities, traders and the Assembly was essential to transforming the city.

The mayor noted that while modern markets had already been developed in Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale, Accra also deserved world-class market infrastructure to improve trading conditions and support economic expansion.

Presenting the project design, Project Architect at AESL Consult, Ms. Abena Otchere, explained that the national initiative comprises three market models and disclosed that construction would begin once the contractor officially takes possession of the site. She added that the project is expected to be completed within 42 months of its commencement.
