Joint Operation Targets Unsafe Fish Processing at Tema Newtown

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), working alongside the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces, has carried out a joint enforcement operation at the Tema Newtown fishing enclave as part of efforts to protect public health.

During the exercise, officials seized contaminated fish from handlers to ensure the products were safely disposed of before they could reach consumers. The team also engaged fish handlers in discussions about the importance of proper hygiene and encouraged them to adopt safer fish-handling and processing practices.

As part of the broader sanitation initiative, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly has begun demolishing structures to facilitate the removal of accumulated waste along the shoreline.

The Assembly also assured the FDA that new hygienic processing platforms will be built to provide fish processors with cleaner and safer spaces for drying and smoking fish.

The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to strengthen food safety standards and ensure that fish and other food products available to the public are safe, wholesome and of good quality.
