Government Pledges Improved Welfare for Judicial Service Staff
The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of Judicial Service staff to support effective, high-quality justice delivery in Ghana.
The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, gave assurance during his keynote address at the opening of the 2nd Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference of the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) in Tamale.
Dr Pelpuo said the welfare of judicial staff should extend beyond salaries and allowances to include safe and decent working conditions, appropriate working tools, continuous professional development, career progression and job security.
He said the effective delivery of justice depended not only on judges and magistrates but also on the administrative, professional and technical staff who support the daily operations of the Judicial Service.
According to him, workers should not be regarded merely as instruments of production because they have families and responsibilities and therefore deserve working conditions that protect their dignity and wellbeing. The Minister said improving staff welfare would help create an environment where judicial workers could perform their duties effectively and contribute to better public service delivery.
Dr Pelpuo urged workers, particularly younger staff, to see technology as an opportunity to improve productivity, acquire new skills and create new avenues for professional growth rather than as a threat to their jobs. He also encouraged judicial staff to continue developing their skills as digitalisation, automation and artificial intelligence reshape the workplace.
The Minister commended the leadership of JUSAG, led by its National President, Mr Samuel Afotey Otu, for organising the conference and creating a platform for discussions on staff welfare and the future of judicial administration. He called for continued collaboration among Government, employers and organised labour to strengthen industrial relations and improve conditions within public institutions.
The conference brought together JUSAG members and stakeholders in the justice sector, including the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and the Regent of Dagbon.
The conference was held under the theme, “Championing Staff Welfare and Technology; Anchors of Quality Justice.”
