Attorney General Inaugurates Committee to Implement Constitutional Review Proposals

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has inaugurated an 11-member Constitution Review Implementation Committee (CRIC) to advance proposals for the review of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

In a press release issued on Saturday, the inauguration follows the Government’s release of its position paper on the recommendations contained in the report of the Constitution Review Committee, chaired by Professor H. Kwesi Prempeh and established by the President last year.

The new committee, chaired by the Presidential Legal Counsel and former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ms Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, has been tasked with examining the Government’s position paper alongside the Constitution Review Committee’s report.

It is also expected to develop a comprehensive framework to guide the implementation of the proposals arising from the constitutional review process.

Other members of the committee are Dr Justice Srem Sai, Mr Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Ms Charlotte Osei, Dr Rainer Akumperigya, Ms Emelia Ankomah, representing the Majority, and Mr Kwame Ayimadu Antwi, representing the Minority.

The committee also includes Mr Samuel Passah, representing Local Government; Mr Oliver Baker Vormawor, who serves as Secretary; Ms Salamatu Iliasu, a Draftsperson; and Mr Eric Owusu-Mensa, responsible for Parliamentary Liaison.

The composition of the committee brings together legal, parliamentary, local government and other relevant expertise to support the implementation process.

The committee is expected to provide a structured approach to translating the recommendations and Government’s position into concrete proposals, while ensuring that the constitutional review process remains participatory and responsive to national interests.

Government has reiterated its commitment to an inclusive and transparent constitutional review process that reflects the aspirations of the Ghanaian people and strengthens the country’s democratic governance.

The initiative is expected to mark a step towards advancing the proposed reforms and ensuring that any amendments to the 1992 Constitution are subjected to the necessary legal, institutional and democratic processes.
