Transport Minister Discloses Road Sector Transformation Measures

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed that the Government’s ongoing transformation agenda is being extended to the road transport sector through the acquisition of new buses, expansion of DVLA offices and the digitisation of driver licensing and vehicle registration services.

The Minister noted that transport development must move beyond individual projects to create seamless connections across rail, road, maritime, inland waterways and aviation.

He revealed this during the 2026 Transport Sector Review Conference, held under the theme “Financing and Delivery of Resilient Transport Infrastructure and Services: A Big Push for Sustainable Economic Transformation”.

Outlining progress in other areas, Mr. Nikpe cited the revival of railway lines, the procurement of two locomotives and 20 wagons, and ongoing efforts to expand rail freight operations.

In the maritime sector, he pointed to the construction of a new port at Akosombo, while in aviation he mentioned the repurposing of Terminal 2 and the acquisition of 3D scanners to strengthen airport operations and security.

“These interventions are part of a broader effort to build a transport system that moves people and goods efficiently and creates the conditions for a robust transport sector,” Mr. Nikpe noted.

The Minister pledged Government’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s transport sector into a more integrated, efficient and resilient system capable of driving sustainable economic growth.
