President Mahama Pushes Local Production of Batteries, Tyres and Auto Parts
President John Dramani Mahama has called for the next phase of Ghana’s industrialisation to focus on the local manufacture of vehicle components, including batteries, tyres, glass, wiring harnesses, plastics and metal parts.
He said Ghana must move beyond vehicle assembly to building an integrated automotive industry that retains more value within the domestic economy.
Addressing the commissioning of Phase Three of the Zonda Tec Ghana Limited Vehicle Assembly Plant, President Mahama urged manufacturers to invest in producing components locally.
“Our goal is to develop an integrated automotive industry in which locally produced materials and components feed directly into vehicle manufacturing,” he said.
The President explained that expanding local component manufacturing would create stronger linkages between large factories and Ghanaian small and medium enterprises while generating additional employment.
He also announced Government’s plan to position Ghana as a leader in electric mobility by leveraging the country’s lithium resources and growing renewable energy capacity.
“Our vision is clear: from minerals to batteries, from batteries to vehicles, from vehicles to exports, all proudly made in Ghana,” he declared.
President Mahama disclosed that the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition was finalising a national Electric Vehicle Policy to regulate charging infrastructure and promote solar-powered charging stations.
He said the policy would ensure balanced development of charging facilities while encouraging the use of clean energy.
The President stated that the local value addition was essential to Ghana’s long-term competitiveness, saying industrial growth would depend on combining strategic minerals, manufacturing capacity and technology into a complete automotive value chain.
