Government Secures Locomotives and Wagons to Revitalise Railway Industry

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed that Ghana’s railway sector is set for a major revival following the acquisition and deployment of two locomotives and twenty wagons under a new off-taker agreement with MES Logistics.

The agreement forms part of government’s broader efforts to strengthen freight transportation and reposition the railway industry.

Addressing the media in Accra on Monday, he explained that the partnership will enable the movement of cargo by rail, helping to decongest the country’s ports and major roads, lower logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and reduce accidents caused by heavy cargo trucks.

Mr Nikpe noted that the investment represents a sound economic decision that will support industrial growth and generate sustainable revenue for the railway sector through efficient operations and proper maintenance.

The Minister urged the Ghana Railway Development Authority and its partners to manage the assets prudently to ensure operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and continued expansion of rail services nationwide.

He reiterated government’s commitment to transforming the railway industry into a key driver of economic growth, trade facilitation, and national development.
