NADMO STAFF IN AFIGYA KWABRE NORTH SENSITIZED ON THE RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT

Staff of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Afigya Kwabre North District have been sensitized on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989) as part of ongoing efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and openness in public service delivery. The sensitization programme, held on June 15, 2026, was facilitated by the District RTI Officer, Miss Yvonne Opoku Agyemang, who educated participants on the provisions of the law and its importance in strengthening democratic governance.

During the session, Miss Agyemang highlighted the critical role of Information Officers in facilitating access to information and ensuring that public institutions comply with the requirements of the RTI Act. She took participants through key aspects of the law, including the procedures for requesting information under Section 18, the responsibilities of public institutions in providing access to information, categories of persons entitled to request information, and the exemptions provided under the Act. She emphasized that the RTI Act serves as an important mechanism for empowering citizens to access information and actively participate in governance processes.
The RTI Officer further explained that access to information is fundamental to open governance, as it promotes transparency, strengthens public trust in institutions, and enhances accountability in decision-making. She noted that when citizens are adequately informed, they are better equipped to contribute to community development and hold public institutions accountable for their actions. The session also provided an opportunity to clarify common misconceptions about the Act, helping participants gain a clearer understanding of both the rights of information seekers and the obligations of public institutions.

The sensitization programme was highly interactive, with staff actively participating in discussions and asking insightful questions on the practical application of the law. Responding to the various concerns raised, Miss Agyemang provided detailed explanations and encouraged participants to share the knowledge acquired with colleagues and members of their communities. She expressed appreciation to the staff for their engagement and reiterated that promoting awareness of the RTI Act is essential to building a culture of transparency, accountability, and citizen participation that supports sustainable development and effective public administration.
