NDPC Chairman Advocates Long-Term Plan for Ghana’s Economic Transformation

The Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, has called for stronger institutions, effective enforcement of planning regulations, and a long-term national development strategy as measures to drive Ghana’s economic transformation and sustainable development.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face programme. Dr. Thompson described institutional weakness as Ghana’s most significant development challenge, arguing that strong institutions are important for implementing policies, enforcing regulations, and sustaining economic growth.

Dr. Thompson stressed that Ghana’s development challenges require a clear long-term national vision backed by consistent implementation.

He noted that the country already has detailed development plans covering urban planning, flood control, infrastructure development, coastal protection, and land-use management, but poor implementation has undermined their effectiveness.

According to him, stronger enforcement of existing laws and greater accountability within local government institutions are necessary to address illegal developments, encroachment on waterways, and environmental degradation.

He emphasized the importance of a long-term national development plan to transform Ghana’s largely informal economy.

Dr. Thompson urged greater attention to inclusive development, particularly in the Savannah Belt where substantial agricultural potential remains untapped despite high poverty levels.

He added that Ghana’s future prosperity depends on strong leadership, effective institutions, and a sustained commitment to long-term planning.

“The only strategy is the transformation of the economy. We need a roadmap for economic transformation and shared prosperity because we cannot continue with business as usual and expect development,” he said.
