President Mahama Allocates GH¢200M For Completion of Police Hospital Expansion

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance to make provision for a little over GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the long-delayed Police Hospital expansion project, with the facility expected to be operational before the end of 2027.

The President announced this at the commissioning of an 85-bed block at the Police Hospital, where he disclosed that Cabinet had decided to terminate the 22-year-old contract following prolonged disagreements and cost overruns with the contractor.

“The contract has been going on for 22 years. We have finally brought it to an end,” President Mahama said, adding that government would complete the project using the required funding.

He explained that the completed expansion would add another 106 beds to the hospital, bringing its total capacity to more than 300 beds.

The additional facilities will include a 12-bed intensive care unit, a new accident and emergency centre, 11 consulting rooms, four paediatric consulting rooms, three general surgical theatres, an orthopaedic theatre, an endoscopy unit and a mortuary with a capacity of 222.

The expansion will also provide MRI and CT scan equipment to improve diagnostic services and support the treatment of patients.

President Mahama said the project formed part of government’s efforts to improve healthcare for police personnel and members of the public who seek treatment at the hospital.

He urged the hospital’s management to maintain high standards of hygiene, patient safety and clinical practice, stressing that the value of the investment would depend on the quality of care delivered and the maintenance of the facilities.
