President Mahama Hosts Bilateral Talks with Ruto, King Abdullah II, Swiss President at UNGA81
President John Dramani Mahama has held a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the High-Level Meeting of Heads of State and Government at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The Tuesday meetings spanned trade, regional security, economic cooperation, and global governance, forming part of Ghana’s diplomatic push to strengthen international partnerships and advance Africa’s interests on the global stage.
President Mahama’s first engagement was with Kenyan President William Ruto, with discussions focusing on trade, regional security, stronger diplomatic ties, and advancing Africa’s interests globally.
Relations between Ghana and Kenya date back to the early years of Africa’s independence struggle and have in recent years been strengthened by the relationship between Presidents Mahama and Ruto.
President Ruto praised President Mahama for championing the “Accra Reset” agenda and drawing global attention to the need for Africa to pursue greater self-financing.
President Mahama also held talks with King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of Jordan, where he pointed to opportunities for stronger economic cooperation, growth, and partnership between the two nations.
Later, President Mahama met with Swiss President Guy Parmelin. During the meeting, he pointed to Ghana’s efforts to turn around an economy he said his administration inherited in difficult circumstances.
He drew attention to Ghana’s decentralisation system and sought Swiss support to strengthen it further.
On revenue mobilisation, President Mahama said gaps remain and identified Artificial Intelligence (AI) as one area where Ghana could benefit from Swiss expertise.
President Mahama also met with Costa Rica’s candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan.
Later in the afternoon, President Mahama met with Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health.
Present at the meetings were the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Government Communications, as well as Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to the President, Joyce Bawa Mogtari.
