President Mahama Pledges Continued Logistical Support for Ghana Police Service
President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Ghana Police Service of continued logistical support to strengthen its operations and improve the safety of officers performing their duties.
He gave the assurance at the commissioning of an 85-bed block at the Police Hospital, where he commended the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Service for what he described as improvements in public safety.
“Our country is safer today than it was before,” President Mahama said, recounting the testimony of a bus driver who indicated that improved road safety had made it possible for buses to travel at night with less fear of highway robbery.
The President also commended the Criminal Investigations Department, the Police Intelligence Department and the Police Cyber Unit for their work, including efforts to reduce unresolved murders.
He assured the Service that government would continue providing the logistics needed to enable officers to carry out their responsibilities.
As part of the support, President Mahama announced that a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles was expected to be delivered in the coming weeks, following the handover of 50 vehicles to the Police Service in December.
He added that government was procuring additional body armour to provide greater protection for officers undertaking operational duties.
The President also disclosed that he had asked the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget for the construction of 250 new police apartments to ease congestion in some barracks.
He said the measures, alongside investments in police healthcare, were intended to strengthen the Service’s capacity to protect the public while reducing the risks faced by its personnel.
