President Mahama, UK Prime Minister agree to deepen cooperation ahead of AU, G20 leadership roles
President John Dramani Mahama and the United Kingdom Prime Minister, Rt Hon Andy Burnham have agreed to strengthen cooperation between their countries, with both leaders identifying opportunities for closer engagement as Ghana prepares to assume the African Union chairmanship and the UK gets ready for its G20 presidency next year.
The two leaders discussed areas of mutual interest during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda.
The UK Prime Minister expressed appreciation for Ghana’s support for structured dialogue within the Commonwealth and pledged closer cooperation with the country.
President Mahama also acknowledged the support of the UK Foreign Secretary, particularly towards Ghana’s economic reset agenda and its ambition to move away from economic dependency.
The discussions placed emphasis on building a new phase of trade, investment and international cooperation to advance Ghana’s economic transformation and strengthen relations between the two countries.
With Ghana expected to assume the African Union chairmanship and the United Kingdom preparing to take on the G20 presidency next year, both leaders identified opportunities to work together on issues of shared interest and global importance.
They expressed optimism about translating their shared values and commitments into practical outcomes that would benefit their respective countries and the wider international community.
The meeting forms part of President Mahama’s engagements at CHOGM 2026, which brings together Commonwealth leaders to discuss issues of common interest and strengthen cooperation among member states.
