Amazon eyes Ghana for digital connectivity partnership
Ghana’s efforts to attract global technology investment gained momentum following discussions on expanding broadband connectivity and digital infrastructure through a potential partnership with Amazon.
The engagement forms part of the Government’s strategy to deepen relationships with leading American corporations by promoting investment, technology transfer, skills development, productive enterprise and job creation as the foundation of a new phase of Ghana-United States economic cooperation.
President John Dramani Mahama held the high-level meeting with senior executives of Amazon on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York as part of a series of engagements with global business leaders.
The discussions focused on opportunities for collaboration in broadband expansion and digital connectivity, with Ghana positioning itself as a destination for long-term technology investment and innovation.
Following the meeting, Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, David Zapolsky, described the engagement with President Mahama as productive and pointed to Ghana’s potential role in the company’s efforts to expand broadband connectivity across Africa.
Zapolsky, who oversees Amazon’s legal, policy, compliance and regulatory affairs, said the discussions reflected growing opportunities for collaboration in advancing digital infrastructure on the continent.
The meeting builds on President Mahama’s wider economic diplomacy agenda aimed at repositioning Ghana’s engagement with major American corporations around mutually beneficial commercial partnerships rather than traditional development assistance.
Earlier this week, the President told participants at the U.S.-Ghana Presidential Roundtable that the next chapter of relations between the two countries should be driven by trade, investment, technology and strategic partnerships capable of creating sustainable jobs and economic growth.
The Amazon engagement reflects Ghana’s approach of using high-level diplomatic engagements to attract global capital, technological expertise and access to international markets in support of national development.
Beyond broadband infrastructure, expanded high-speed internet connectivity is expected to create opportunities for digital education, healthcare delivery, financial inclusion, agriculture, entrepreneurship and e-commerce, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
Greater connectivity could also enable more young Ghanaians to participate in the global digital economy while supporting innovation and the growth of technology-enabled businesses.
The discussions further align with Ghana’s ambition to strengthen its position as a digital and technology hub in West Africa by offering international companies access to the African market through the country’s stable business environment and its role as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat.
The engagement with Amazon adds to a series of strategic meetings President Mahama has held in New York to attract investment and deepen partnerships with global corporations in sectors considered critical to Ghana’s economic transformation.
