Ayalolo BRT contra flow begins Tuesday on three major Accra corridors
A new Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) contra flow traffic arrangement will take effect on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, across the Amasaman, Adenta and Kasoa corridors into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) as government moves to reduce congestion and improve the reliability of public transport.
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs announced the initiative in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR).
According to the Ministry, the contra flow system will operate during peak commuting hours from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., allowing Ayalolo BRT buses to travel in the priority direction against the normal flow of traffic on designated sections of the affected roads.
The three corridors have been selected because they serve as major gateways for thousands of commuters travelling into and out of the Central Business District each day.
The Ministry said the intervention forms part of government’s efforts to strengthen public transport and improve traffic management across the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
It explained that the arrangement is expected to improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo BRT services, reduce travel time for passengers, ease congestion on key approaches to the city centre, encourage greater use of mass public transport and improve overall urban mobility within the metropolis.
Under the new traffic regime, dedicated contra flow lanes will be reserved exclusively for authorised Ayalolo BRT buses.
The Ministry stressed that private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be permitted to use the designated lanes.
To ensure smooth implementation, the MTTD will deploy traffic officers to strategic intersections and sections of the affected corridors to direct traffic, enforce compliance and maintain safety throughout the operation.
The Ministry has therefore appealed to motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses and residents along the affected routes to cooperate fully with traffic management personnel and observe all road signs and directions during the implementation period.
As part of public sensitisation, the management of Ayalolo BRT will hold a press briefing at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, to provide further details on the contra flow arrangement and its operational guidelines.
The Ministry said continued engagement with transport operators, local authorities and other stakeholders would support the successful implementation of the initiative and contribute to a more efficient public transport system in the capital.
