Communication Minister Calls for Africa to Embrace Digital Determination.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has called on Africa to move from digital dependence to digital determination as the continent builds its digital future.

Delivering a message at the maiden Africa Virtual Asset Summit (AVAS) 2026 in Accra, under the theme, “Tokenisation: Africa’s Pathway Towards Building a Trusted, Inclusive and Innovative Digital Asset Ecosystem,” the Minister said virtual assets are a necessary tool in a world driven by innovation.

He stated that Ghana would not stand on the sidelines as the digital economy evolves, noting that Parliament’s passage of the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 (Act 1154), provides clear licensing requirements, consumer protection measures and anti-money laundering standards.

According to him, Ghana ranks 29th globally in cryptocurrency adoption, with 3.1 million citizens engaging with digital assets.

“Virtual assets are not a passing trend. They are a necessary tool in a world driven by innovation. Ghana will not stand on the sidelines and watch this change unfold. We will not ban what our young people are already using. We will regulate it, make it safe, and make it work for our people,” he said.

Mr. George said Ghana was building an ecosystem anchored in sovereignty, security and financial inclusion, supported by a target of 70 per cent 5G population coverage by March 2027 and the integration of the Ghana Card for biometric verification.

He expressed the view that with the right legal frameworks, secure infrastructure and empowered youth through initiatives such as the One Million Coders Programme, Africa’s digital future could be built on the continent.
