Draft Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulations Undergo Stakeholder Review
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission, with support from the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) under the Norwegian Sustainable Oceans Project, has organised a two-day stakeholder review workshop on the Draft Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulations developed under the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146).
The maiden workshop, held in Takoradi, brought together fisher associations, enforcement agencies, state institutions, civil society organisations, and other key stakeholders from the Western Region.
It formed part of a series of regional consultations aimed at strengthening Ghana’s fisheries governance framework ahead of the finalisation of the regulations.
Discussions centred on fisheries management, aquaculture development, licensing and registration, monitoring, control and surveillance, conservation measures, post-harvest management, fish quality assurance, and enforcement mechanisms.
Participants used the platform to examine the draft regulations, identify potential implementation challenges, and provide technical inputs on key thematic areas.
Delivering the closing remarks at the end of the second day, the Deputy Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Professor Berchie Asiedu, commended participants for their invaluable contributions and insightful recommendations throughout the discussions.
He said the collaborative efforts and diverse perspectives shared during the workshop would play a critical role in shaping an inclusive regulatory framework that promotes sustainable fisheries management and supports the growth of Ghana’s aquaculture sector.
Professor Asiedu added that every contribution brought stakeholders one step closer to a resilient and prosperous future for Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.
Organisers said the regional consultations underscore the Ministry’s commitment to an inclusive and participatory process in developing regulations that are practical, responsive, and effective in ensuring the sustainable management and development of Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.
