Ghanaians Urged to Cultivate Habit of Saving
The Board Chairman of Nwabiagya Community Bank PLC, Prof. Samuel Adjei-Nsiah, has urged Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of saving to reduce poverty and improve their financial security.
He said poverty has become endemic in many homes and communities, partly because people have overlooked the importance of saving for future needs.
Prof. Adjei-Nsiah made the call when he addressed the bank’s customers and shareholders at its 38th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Barekese, the Ashanti Region.
He stressed the need for individuals to take responsibility for their financial future by developing consistent savings habits, which he described as an important step towards reducing poverty.
Prof. Adjei-Nsiah said Ghana’s macroeconomic environment had improved in 2025, noting that the headline inflation rate fell from 28 per cent in 2024, while the monetary policy rate declined from 27 per cent to 18 per cent.
He added that the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth increased slightly from 5.8 per cent in 2024 to 6.0 per cent in 2025, while the Ghana cedi appreciated against the US dollar from about GH¢15 to US$1 in 2024 to approximately GH¢11 to US$1 in 2025.
According to him, despite the challenging and competitive operating environment, including increased competition from universal banks and fintech companies, the bank remained resilient and recorded improvements in its financial performance and position.
He disclosed that the bank’s total assets increased by 26.84 per cent, from GH¢336,468,008 in 2024 to GH¢426,783,832 in the financial year ending December 31, 2025.
Gross loans and advances also increased by 52.13 per cent, from GH¢35,332,753 to GH¢53,750,024 during the period.
Prof. Adjei-Nsiah said the bank had expanded its microfinance scheme to provide greater access to financial services, particularly for farmers, traders and operators of cottage industries.
He encouraged people within these sectors to form groups and enrol in the scheme to benefit from the bank’s financial support.
He further disclosed that shareholders’ funds increased significantly by 224.5 per cent, from GH¢6,173,578 to GH¢20,034,057, describing the development as a major improvement in the financial position of the bank.
Prof. Adjei-Nsiah expressed gratitude to the bank’s customers, management and staff for their continued support, hard work and dedication towards the growth and development of the institution.
The Guest Speaker, Nana Dr Appiagyei Dankawoso I, commended the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) for the reforms being implemented in the financial sector.
He particularly noted the elevation of rural banks into community banks after years of operation, saying the reforms would strengthen their operations and enable them to expand their activities.
Nana Dankawoso explained that under the reforms, the minimum stated capital requirement for existing rural banks had been increased from GH¢1 million to GH¢5 million.
He said the new capital requirement would provide community banks with a stronger financial base to expand their operations and improve service delivery.
Nana Dankawoso therefore appealed to customers and shareholders of Nwabiagya Community Bank to increase their shareholdings to help the bank meet the Bank of Ghana’s new minimum stated capital requirement by December 31, 2026.
