GMA Refutes Claims on Vessel Monitoring System
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has strongly refuted claims that its vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that ships sailing within Ghana’s waters are not monitored.
The GMA described the assertions as “false, misleading, and not reflective of the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana.”
According to the Authority, its surveillance system remains fully operational and provides 24‑hour monitoring of vessels within Ghana’s maritime domain. It explained that the system is also used to safeguard offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines, and submarine cables.
The Authority stated this on Tuesday, in response to comments made by Mr Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite.
The GMA noted that it employs standard operating procedures to track vessels, verify their identity and compliance, and support safety, security, and environmental protection.
“The suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not monitored is therefore untrue,” the statement read.
Reiterating its commitment, the Authority assured the public of continuous surveillance and protection of Ghana’s maritime interests, urging citizens to disregard the claims and rely on official communications from the GMA.
