Government To Fully Fund Accra-Kumasi Expressway Without Borrowing-Finance Minister

The government will, by December 31, 2026, make available the full amount required for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway without borrowing.

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, announced this on Monday at the handing over of the right-of-way of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway to the government.

He said the decision demonstrated the government’s commitment to responsible spending while ensuring that major infrastructure projects received the needed funding for completion.

The minister said the government would ensure that the financial resources required for the expressway were ready by the end of the year

“For the avoidance of doubt, we will not borrow a pesewa for this construction,” he said.

According to him, the project would reduce travel time and transport costs, improve road safety and set a new standard for infrastructure delivery in the country.

He also commended the Ghana Armed Forces for completing its assignment professionally and ahead of schedule, saying the exercise had demonstrated the capacity of the Armed Forces to contribute to national infrastructure development beyond its core security mandate.

Dr Forson said the Value for Money Office under the Ministry of Finance would scrutinise the expressway project to ensure that expenditure was properly justified and that the country obtained value for the funds invested.

The Minister said the expressway would support job creation and economic growth while providing infrastructure that would serve generations to come.
