Greater Accra Peace Council calls for Calm Over Tema-Nungua Meridian Rock Dispute
The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC) has expressed concern over the ongoing boundary dispute between the chiefs and people of the Tema and Nungua traditional areas regarding the ownership of land and the Meridian Rock.
According to the Council, it is particularly worried about the growing exchanges among youth from the two traditional areas on social media, warning that the escalating media war is heightening tensions and posing a threat to peace and security in the region.
The Peace Council has therefore urged both parties to exercise restraint and remain calm while efforts are made to achieve an amicable resolution of the dispute.
GARPC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting dialogue, negotiation and reconciliation, and called on all stakeholders to support initiatives aimed at securing a lasting solution.
The Council noted the need for the feuding parties to engage in discussions and address their concerns through dialogue marked by openness, mutual understanding and respect adding that there were more factors uniting the chiefs and people of the two communities than issues dividing them.
It further advised the parties to channel their disagreements through the appropriate institutions to enable constructive engagement and build consensus on mutually acceptable outcomes.
The Peace Council also urged both traditional and social media platforms to refrain from actions and publications that could inflame tensions between the two traditional areas.
GARPC reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and urged all parties to work together towards a peaceful resolution of the dispute.
