NPC Strengthens Traditional and Local Governance Systems in Akuapem
The National Peace Council (NPC), through the Eastern Regional Peace Council, has strengthened efforts to promote effective collaboration between traditional authorities and local government institutions through a two-day capacity development programme in the Akuapem South Municipality.
The programme, organised in collaboration with the Akuapem South Municipal Assembly and the Adonten Division of the Akuapem Traditional Council, was held under the theme: “Strengthening Traditional and Local Governance Systems in the Adonten Division of the Akuapem Traditional Council.”
The training covered key areas including Customary Law and Statutory Provisions, Customary Arbitration, Natural Justice, Governance, Local Economic Development, Investment, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Community Development.
Speaking during the programme, the Chairman of the Eastern Regional Peace Council, Prof. Mark Boadu, emphasised the complementary roles of traditional authorities and local government institutions in maintaining peace, promoting effective governance and advancing sustainable development.
He encouraged participants to strengthen cooperation between the two governance structures and use their respective roles and responsibilities to address community challenges and prevent disputes.
Prof. Boadu also underscored the importance of fair and transparent dispute resolution, stressing that confidence in local governance systems was essential to maintaining peaceful communities.
He encouraged participants to support initiatives that created local economic opportunities, particularly for young people, and promote entrepreneurship as a means of strengthening livelihoods and community development.
The Chairman urged the creation of peaceful and stable environments capable of attracting investment and supporting sustainable economic growth.
The initiative also highlighted the importance of integrating traditional governance structures with formal local government systems to enhance social cohesion, effective dispute resolution and sustainable development.
It brought together about 40 chiefs, traditional leaders, elders, opinion leaders, and local government officials to enhance their understanding of governance systems and strengthen their capacity to contribute to peace and sustainable development in their communities.
