Obuasi Municipal Assembly Begins Plans for Own Landfill Site — MCE
The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has begun plans to establish a dedicated landfill site to improve waste disposal and strengthen solid waste management in the municipality.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Faustilove Appiah Kannin, who disclosed this, said the Assembly was working towards securing its own disposal facility to complement existing waste management arrangements.
She, however, did not provide a specific timeline for the facility’s establishment.
Currently, the Obuasi Municipal Assembly shares the management of the Ahansonyewodia disposal site, located in the Obuasi East Municipality, with Akrofuom District Assemblies.
Madam Appiah Kannin made the disclosure when the Assembly began installing 150 waste bins at strategic locations across the municipality as part of measures to curb indiscriminate dumping.
She expressed concern about sanitation challenges in the municipality and said the intervention formed part of efforts to improve waste management and restore Obuasi’s reputation as one of the cleanest municipalities in the country.
The MCE urged Assembly Members to take ownership of the initiative by working with their respective committees and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the bins were regularly emptied and properly maintained.
She said persons arrested for indiscriminate dumping would be sanctioned in accordance with the Assembly’s bye-laws, with offenders liable to fines of not less than GH¢500.
Explaining the operation of the new bins, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr Simon Agamgaba, said the containers would be secured behind metal poles and fitted with padlocks to prevent misuse.
He said the bins were designed to receive small quantities of public waste and were not intended for household or bulk domestic waste. He cautioned residents against depositing domestic waste in the containers, saying offenders would be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Assembly is deploying a total of 150 waste bins at selected locations across the municipality, with the installation having commenced as part of the sanitation intervention.
The ceremony was attended by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Joyce Akosua Angmorteh; the Presiding Member, David Odoom; Assembly Members; heads of departments; and other Assembly officials.
